Kelvin Gastelum has named Israel Adesanya as the hardest puncher he has ever faced in his UFC career.

‘The Last Stylebender’ defends his UFC middleweight title once again against Paulo Costa at UFC 253 on Fight Island.

Gastelum and Adesanya delivered a five-round classic in 2019The former welterweight contender was told by president Dana White in 2015 to move up to 185lbs after consistently missing weight.

In doing so, he placed himself in immediate danger every time he entered the octagon as he faced off against some absolute monsters en route to a title shot.

Heavy hitters Tim Kennedy, Vitor Belfort and Michael Bisping all tried to take out Gastelum, yet all were stopped brutally.

When he faced Adesanya for the interim middleweight title at UFC 236 in 2019, both men were forced to summon every ounce of strength and desire to hear the final bell in an enthralling fight.

And, despite facing some of the hardest hitters in the division, Gastelum told fans on Twitter the ‘Last Stylebender’ hit harder than anyone he had ever faced.

He wrote: “The only person that has dropped me has been Izzy. So him.”

Given the gruelling nature of the fight and the depths both men had to reach in their five round battle, it is no surprise to hear the 28-year-old praise the heart of the current world champion.

“I did not expect Israel to be as tough as he was,” Gastelum added. “The level of punishment taken on both sides would’ve made many, many, many great fighters quit.”

Although the former NCAA wrestler is on a three-fight skid after defeats to Darren Till and Jack Hermansson, he outlined his plans to fight for the title once again in the future.
