England have left in-form batsman Ravi Bopara out of the Test squad to face Pakistan, and will instead give one-day sensation Eoin Morgan another chance to prove himself in the longer form of the game,
Bopara hit two centuries in his last county match for Essex but that wasn’t enough to force him back into the squad.
Chairman of selectors Geoff Miller said: “Ravi has been in good form but we have created our quality through consistency and we need to see more from Eoin.”
Morgan will be determined to match the success he has achieved in one-day cricket in the longest format of the game.
The innovative 23-year-old left-hander has made two unbeaten centuries and a fifty in 50-over internationals this year and has scored three half centuries in Twenty20 matches for England.
His introduction to Test cricket was less spectacular with scores of 44 and 37 in his first two innings, both against Bangladesh.
Elsewhere in the squad, seamer Ajmal Shahzad is preferred to fellow Yorkshireman Tim Bresnan, while Graeme Swann and Steven Finn return after being rested.
Kevin Pietersen also returns after missing the one-day series against Bangladesh with an Achilles injury.
It means England are at almost full strength, with only Ian Bell missing after breaking a foot against Bangladesh.
