Mexican boxing legend Erik Morales has criticised the country’s current star Canelo Alvarez ahead of his fight against Sergey Kovalev this weekend.
The 29-year-old is moving up in weight to try and match Morales by winning a belt in four divisions, however ‘El Terrible’ believes Canelo’s wins should come with an asterisk.
Morales told ESPN Mx: “He has fought with big names when they are at the end of their career.
“Shane Mosley was at the end of his career, Miguel Cotto was at the end of his career, Kovalev is at the end of his career.
“With [Gennady] Golovkin, he had been waiting for him to deteriorate. It’s not a reproach, but it is something that people see.

“I fought with the number one or number two in the world and I also understand that this is a business.
“Now it is administration that make a career and if that was the case for me then it would have made my career different.
“At the end of your career you have to ask yourself, how do you want to be remembered?
“And the questions and criticisms of Canelo have been constant and it is because of the types of opponents he chooses. With myself and some others we chose the best, I chose the best of each division.”
