Cricket World Cup final: The simple mistake by New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult that helped England win the trophy

The Cricket World Cup final was decided by the finest of margins with England clinching the trophy in a super over.

New Zealand will be ruing about what could have been on Sunday at Lord’s.

Ben Stokes was given the ultimate reprieve in the penultimate over and he would eventually be the man who saw the hosts tie the scores.

The England hero smashed the ball towards the boundary while needing 22 runs from just nine balls as Trent Boult readied himself to take the catch.

Getting Stokes out would have all but ended the contest with only the tailenders left to come.

The New Zealand fast bowler, though, stumbled backwards while catching the ball and stepped on the boundary rope.

Boult tried to throw the ball to team-mate Martin Guptil who was inside the boundary – but it was too late.

Instead of removing the dangerous man, England went six runs closer to their target.

It was a remarkable final few balls with Boult then going on to bowl the final over and conceding 14 to take it down to a super over decider.

Incredibly, both sides finished level again but England lifted the trophy by virtue of having scored more boundaries.

After the match, Stokes said: “I’m pretty lost for words. All the hard work over four years, to get here and be champions of the world it’s an amazing feeling. I’m pretty done.”
