Darren Till explains how Dana White tried to convince him not to take Kelvin Gastelum fight at UFC 244 and is still eyeing Anfield debut

Darren Till and Kelvin Gastelum go head-to-head in UFC 244 on November 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Liverpudlian comes into the fight off the back of two losses, against Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal respectively, with the latter ending in a knockout.

Gastelum, meanwhile, also suffered a loss in his most recent outing when he stepped into the cage with Nigeria’s undefeated Israel Adesanya.

Till has undergone a huge body transformation ahead of his fight with Gastelum where he will make his debut in the middleweight division.

It’s predicted to be a tough night in the cage and, as he explained to talkSPORT, UFC president Dana White was against the idea.

“Dana tried to convince me to not take the fight and I was just like, ‘Why? Why?’ If it’s another loss, which it won’t be, so what?”

When asked about the talents of his opponent and his career so far, Till said: “A lot of people keep saying about me having big bollocks taking this fight and I don’t see it like that.”

“Where I come from and how we train and how I am as a fighter, my mentality is, I’m here to fight the best, win or lose, I’m here to fight all these top fighters, I don’t really understand the concept of the easier path or the easy fights, if that’s what you want, maybe you should look at another career.

“I’m coming off two losses and probably taking one of the most risky fight – not even in the middleweight division – but the whole of the UFC.”

While showing respect and admiration for his opponent Till added: “I can’t say enough about Kelvin, I’ve got respect for him, but I’m going in there to prove my worth against him.

“If I know what I’m good at and if I do it, Kelvin won’t touch me, he won’t, he just simply won’t lay a glove on me. It could go the other way and he could be victorious on that night we’ll just have to see, if it’s a third loss, at least I didn’t take the shit bag route, I’m fighting the best.”

When asked about a future fight at Anfield following UFC 244, he explained: “Whatever happens with Israel and [his next fight], whether Israel wins or loses, if I win against Kelvin, I feel like that’s the fight to make at Anfield.

“Let all these top middleweights have their light, let them chase the belts, I’m chasing something different right now, the belt will come in time, I’ve got to be very patient, I’m only 26, I’ve got a lot of years left to give.”
