England on top despite Pakistan comeback

England remain in full control of the npower Second Test despite a Pakistan fightback at Edgbaston.

A rain hit day saw England’s top order continue to frustrate the Pakistan bowlers as Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen both reached half centuries.

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal finally gave the tourists something to cheer about as his five-wicket haul helped see the hosts collapse from 177-2 to 251 all out.

That gave England a first-innings lead of 179, largely due to Pietersen’s unconvincing 80 and Trott’s more impressive 55 as the pair added 133 runs together.

Pakistan’s second innings got off to the worst possible start when James Anderson bowled captain Salman Butt for nought, leaving Imran Farhat and Azhar Ali at the crease at the end of play with the score at 19-1, as Pakistan trail by 160 runs.
