Kelvin Gastelum causes controversy at weigh-in by ‘leaning’ on coach ahead of fight with Darren Till at UFC 244

Kelvin Gastelum’s weigh-in ahead of his bout with Darren Till at UFC 244 caused controversy as pictures appeared to show him leaning on one of his coaches while on the scales.

Gastelum required the use of a towel to make weight for the co-main event fight at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Video footage of the former Ultimate Fighter champion on the scales aroused suspicion because it showed his elbow resting on one of his coaches by his side.

The New York State Athletics Commission released a statement saying that the American fighter would not be disqualified from the bout but they may pursue disciplinary action.

The statement read: “The commission has reviewed the footage available to it at this time of Mr. Gastelum’s weigh-in.

“The official weight determination will not be disturbed, and Kelvin Gastelum will not be disqualified from competing at UFC 244, as the possible contact indicated in the video cannot be said to have materially impacted Mr. Gastelum’s weight to the extent that it would have exceeded the applicable weight limit allowable for competition in the match.

“The commission will continue to review the matter and disciplinary action will be pursued if clear evidence of contact with another person during the weigh-in process becomes evident, as any such contact is a violation of commission policy.”

Gastelum has had issues with making weight in the past and two of his previous fights have been fought at catchweight because he could not cut down enough.

His opponent, Liverpool-based Till was not bothered if Gastelum had cheated or not at the weigh-in.

He told BT Sport: “If he was a few pounds over that doesn’t affect the fight. I don’t really like to get involved in that b*******. Whatever they’ve done they’ve done.

“If they have they have and if they haven’t they haven’t. I’m not going to sit there analysing it. It means nothing to me.”

Till is hoping to stop two straight defeats in the UFC with his last coming against Jorge Masvidal in London in March.

Masvidal is taking on Nate Diaz in the main event in New York.
