Sir Ian McGeechan tipping British and Irish Lions to seal series win over All Blacks – LISTEN

Sir Ian McGeechan is backing the British and Irish Lions to seal an historic series win over New Zealand.

Having lost the first Test by a 15-point margin, the tourists came roaring back last weekend to set up a thrilling decider in Auckland.

Victory at Eden Park would give the Lions a first Test series triumph over the All Blacks since 1971, and McGeechan believes Warren Gatland’s side can pull it off.

The legendary former Lions coach told talkSPORT: “If it is going pretty close into the last ten minutes, I still believe the Lions can be one score better and – fingers crossed – that is what we would all like to see.”

Asked what the Lions will have to do to secure victory, McGeechan added: “Discipline is going to be needed. We can’t afford soft penalties which we were giving away last week.

“We have got to have that patience not to go chasing silly things but I also think we have got to be accurate on the breakdown. The scrum and lineout, there is pretty much parity there.

“It is when the ball is in play that we have got to match them when they are carrying it, stop them when they have got got it and get across the gainline when we have it, which was the big difference in the way the Lions played last week. That then puts extra pressure on them.

“It needs accuracy and needs really a clear head of knowing what you are doing and when, and the impact it will make, and if the Lions get that right, then the scoreboard stays close and more and more pressure builds on New Zealand.”

The British and Irish Lions v New Zealand is live on talkSPORT, kicking off at 8:35am UK time on Saturday, July 8, 2017
