England’s decision to overlook Ravi Bopora in favour of Eoin Morgan for the first test against Pakistan at Trent Bridge was the correct one, according to Darren Gough.
The former England bowler and now talkSPORT presenter believes Morgan’s call up was the right choice as it brings a balance to the squad and will allow the batsmen to develop so he his ready to take on Australia in the Ashes later this year.
He told talkSPORT: “I think it was a right decision. Morgan is a terrific talent and he’s left-handed. I know we have got Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook at the top but it’s nice to have left-handers.
“Bowlers, especially fast bowlers don’t like bowling at left-handed batsmen if the ball isn’t swinging.
“If you look at Australia when they had that great side, they had a lot of left-handers in there. When the ball’s not swinging it goes across them, they can cut you, they can make width out of anything like Gilchrist did, like Langer did, like Hayden did, like Hussey does.
“They are very hard to bowl at so I think it’s good that we get Morgan in there for the Ashes trip.”
