Tommy Fury EXCLUSIVE: I have made my own name away from Tyson thanks to Love Island… now I want to become a great fighter

Tommy Fury says he is serious about becoming a boxing superstar like his brother Tyson.

The 20-year-old is best known for his stint on popular reality TV show Love Island but says he is now fully focused on honing his craft in the ring.

Fury had two professional fights prior to his appearance on the dating programme earlier this year and will make his return to the sport on December 21, on the undercard of Daniel Dubois vs Kyotaro Fujimoto.

In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, the light-heavyweight hopeful said: “Fighting is in me. It is in my whole family. Speak to my dad, speak to Tyson, speak to my cousins – we all love fighting.

“I was making more than enough money doing what I was doing but did it make me as happy as boxing does? No. Because boxing is in my blood and boxing is what I love to do.

“I have not done anything major. I don’t consider myself as a big superstar. It is not a hard thing to do sitting on an island and do whatever you’re doing. You don’t have to have a talent to do that so I want to perfect my craft and earn my stripes with the talent I have now.”

Fury has garnered a whole host of new fans thanks to Love Island – he now boasts almost three million followers on Instagram – and he believes it has helped him to step out of the shadow of his older brother Tyson.

Tyson – the former heavyweight world champion – is one of boxing’s biggest stars who has seen his profile skyrocket since a dramatic 2018 fight with Deontay Wilder in the US and a foray into WWE.

“Before I went in to Love Island, it was ‘oh, that’s Tyson Fury’s brother’. Now, it is ‘that is Tommy Fury,’” added the younger Fury.

“I have made my own name. Maybe not in the boxing world but that is why I am there on December 21 because I want to set the record straight.

“I don’t want to be known as a reality TV star.  When people walk past me and ask me for a photograph I want people to say ‘there is that fighter Tommy Fury, he’s a great fighter him, go and get a picture with him’.”

Fury also reiterated his desire for a future fight with another Brit with a big social media following – KSI.

The YouTuber won his first professional fight against fellow ‘influencer’ Logan Paul in Los Angeles on Saturday night in a bout that was promoted by Eddie Hearn.

“I respect KSI for getting in the ring,” said Fury. “He did say he wants to fight [again] after the fight [against Logan Paul]. I am a young man myself and everyone saying, ‘oh, a professional boxer calling out a YouTuber’. But isn’t he signed with Eddie Hearn? Didn’t he just fight on DAZN?

“Has he got a professional licence? Yes. Did he fight without a headguard? Yes. Did he fight the same as a professional? Yes.

“Have I had a million fights? No. Have I got any titles? No. Have I had a lot of fights? No. It is quite an even playing field so why not get it on?”
