Trott laughs off Ponting talk of Ashes whitewash

Jonathan Trott says Ricky Ponting has only succeeded in increasing the pressure on his Australia side by claiming England face another Ashes whitewash.

England were thrashed 5-0 the last time the Ashes were held Down Under in 2006-07 and Aussie skipper Ponting says it is ‘absolutely possible’ his side can repeat that scoreline this winter.

But Trott, who scored a debut hundred in the deciding Ashes Test in 2009 to help England regain the urn on home soil, has shrugged off the bullish comments and believes Ponting could end up regretting putting undue pressure on his team.

“Probably some of the guys will laugh at what he said,” admitted Trott.

“I’ve played only one game against Australia and they wanted to win that but it didn’t work out too well for them.

“I don’t know Ricky Ponting well or what he would mean by saying stuff like that.

“But if I were to say something like that, I’d find it put pressure on me and the team more than if we just go about our business.”
